"For a very long time I’ve searched for the best way for me to make a statement about Women’s Equality that is kind, encouraging, powerful, and something every woman—every person—can understand. At first, I was going to do portraits but there are many doing them. Some feel a bit angry to me. Some won’t look at them seriously, and my concern is that they might define language barriers, cultures, race, gender preference, religious beliefs, etc. This series of abstract horse paintings called "I Am the Storm" is my statement. Most people in the US can identify with a horse in positive way. My quest is to create a strong message depicting such a beautiful and common animal that portrays Strength, Wisdom, Brilliance, Swiftness, Courage, Leadership, and steadfastness. There will most likely be negative comments and thoughts from a subject like this, but this is something I can do as an active woman artist. I'm painting these horses, mares and fillies all of them, representing strong women I know and have met, and their character traits. Each painting comes with a process journal, which holds my comments, poems, color choices, decisions I have made concerning the next addition to the piece, words from the horse’s namesake and room for the collector to write their own thoughts about it. Art is a vital tool in making a statement for women’s equality and power. I will produce about 25 pieces in the series." -- Karen Mosbacher Clewell
