Why Rome?

Rome and Floyd County are very fortunate to have multiple opportunities for citizens to extend their education.

Higher education has been a priority in this area for many years. Even as far back as the early 1900s, Rome could boast of two such institutes, giving residents a rich heritage of educational opportunities. Rome is home to four colleges, which is truly impressive for a community our size. Whether it be the degree you've always wanted or some classes in art or even technical training, you can find those opportunities in Rome!

For more than a century, Berry College has emphasized the importance of a balanced education that unites a challenging academic program with opportunities for meaningful work experience, spiritual and moral growth, and service to others. Nationally recognized for its quality and value, Berry is an independent, coeducational college of approximately 1,850 students that offers undergraduate degree programs in the sciences, humanities, arts and social sciences, as well as undergraduate and master's level opportunities in business and teacher education. One of Berry's most striking features is its campus, which covers more than 26,000 acres.

Founded in 1873, Shorter College is a four-year, coeducational college located on a hilltop campus in Rome. An affiliate of the Georgia Baptist Convention, the college offers an educational experience rooted in the liberal arts in an environment that integrates Christian values within a nurturing community. There are approximately 1,050 students. Master's level and adult-degree programs at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels are offered on campus. Shorter's music program has an international reputation for excellence, producing graduates who are opera stars and university professors, performers and teachers.

Georgia Highlands College, a nonresidential two-year college of the University System of Georgia, has more than 4,000 students enrolled at five teaching sites in Northwest Georgia. The college offers associates degrees and career degrees. Technology plays an important role in Georgia Highland's student advancement.
